“In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment,” reads the official Evil Dead Rise synopsis. “The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.” Take a look at the first image from Evil Dead Rise below.

The fifth Evil Dead film has been in various stages of production for quite some time after the 2013 remake directed by Fede Alvarez proved incredibly popular and also showed that the franchise could survive without Evil Dead protagonist Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell). Alvarez was originally attached to create a sequel to his reboot, but after the success of Don’t Breathe, Alvarez has put aside his plans for now. Raimi handpicked writer/director Lee Cronin for Evil Dead Rise, whose previous work includes the short film Ghost Train and the 2019 horror film The Hole in the Ground. After wrapping production, Cronin announced that they had used 6500 litres of fake blood during the shoot, which suggests that horror fans can look forward to some pretty messy Deadite attacks.

The Evil Dead Rise cast includes Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie, Lily Sullivan as Beth, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Mia Challis as Jessica, Tai Wano, Jayden Daniels, and Billy Reynolds-McCarthy. Campbell has stated that his time playing Ash is over and that he will not be reprising his role in the new film.

Evil Dead Rise was produced by both New Line Cinema and Ghost House Pictures and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Evil Dead Rise is scheduled for a theatrical release in April 2023 after originally being planned as an HBO Max exclusive.

Evil Dead Rise will now be heading to theaters on April 23, 2023.
